Beware of trading robots

October 22, 2008 9:30 am

It’s kinda funny…

I was playing around with creating some forex trading ‘robots’… (as an absolute beginner)

I’m somewhere around version 13 or 14…

In any case, I forgot to turn it off before I went to bed…

When I got to my computer this morning – I was shocked to see a trade was in progress…

Don’t worry, it was only in my demo account…

But seeing that the trade was up 60 pips… or $600 US… I WISHED it was in my live account LOL…

In any case, it wasn’t bad… I thought…

So I closed off that trade, to work on something else.

Getting distracted, I left the computer only to come back 2 hours later, and noticed that somehow the trade was still on… but now it was up 96 pips ($960 US)!

That’s funny… I thought I CLOSED that trade?

When I looked closer I confirmed – I DID close the trade!

This robot decided to continue following the rules and opened ANOTHER trade 2 hours AFTER I manually took profits on the previous trade!

So over the period of 14 hours this robot was left to run, it racked up 156 pips ($1,560) – IN SPITE of me!

And that’s the lesson I wanted to share today…

Don’t let yourself get in the way of your trading success.

Even in today’s example, I’m the one who layed out the rules for this robot to follow, yet I couldn’t even follow them as well as it did!

Many times as humans we want to out-think, out-guess and out-manuveur the markets – instead of just following our plan…

If you’ve done your homework and got a system that works, then your job is to simply execute that system. (Maybe a job best left to a robot? Who knows?)

Continued Success!
